Joan Sutherland and Luciano Pavarotti: «Lucia di Lammermoor» (1972)

20 Dec

Here are the great Joan Sutherland and Luciano Pavarotti performing the closing duet from Act I of Donizetti’s 1835 masterpiece, Lucia di Lammermoor. The performance, taped live in 1972 from the stage of the Metropolitan Opera as part of a gala concert in honor of the Met’s retiring general manager, Sir Rudolph Bing, is introduced by an earlier opera great, Rise Stevens. At the time of this appearance, Miss Sutherland and Mr. Pavarotti were not only freshly dressed but also back from their joint Met triumphs in yet another Gaëtano Donizetti gem, the comic Daughter of the Regiment. Both singers are in glorious, ringing form. We think that you might like to take full advantage of that fact.
